WAUPACA POST

COURT HOUSE ADDITIONS

The committee on public property, of the county board, met on Tuesday, to consider plans for the proposed addition to the court house, to give more vault room, and also to provide a meeting place for the county board to be used when circuit court is in session. All members of the committee were present as follows:  W.O. Ware, Waupaca, chairman; S.L. Perry, Marion, secretary; P.K. Hayward, Royalton; Martin Devine, Lebanon; C.C. Boyce, Farmington.

Architect William Waters of Oshkosh was present with a pencil sketch of an addition to the northeast corner of the building.  He proposes to build an addition, 42 by 47, adjoining the treasurer’s and clerk of court’s offices. The treasurer is to move into what is now the sheriff’s office, and use the vault which is next to it, now used by the county clerk.  There is to be a new vault built in what is now the treasurer’s office, for the use of the county clerk, and what is now the treasurer’s vault will be added to the clerk of court’s vault, which it joins.  The present treasurer’s office will also be used as a passage way through which to go into the addition, which will contain, on the first floor, the sheriff’s office,; an office for the superintendent of schools, and two committee rooms for the county board.

Upstairs, there will be the assembly room for the county board, which will be 30 by 36 feet, a library room for he law books, toilet rooms, and a small judge’s room.  Provision is also made for a side stair case and outside door so that the sheriff can bring prisoners from the jail up into the court room without going through the main part of the building.  Mr. Waters estimated that the addition could be built for $8,000 and that the total cost, including furniture and fixtures, would not exceed $10,000.

After looking over the plan, the committee passed a motion asking for Mr. Waters to furnish plans, blue print, specifications and estimate, for consideration by the committee at an adjourned meeting to be held on Monday, March 5.

The committee, at its last meeting, had before it plans by Hans Knudsen, which provided for an addition to the east side of the court house, the objection to them being that they would do away with the windows in the court room on the east side of the building, which the Waters plan does not.

Mr. Waters was the architect who drew the original plans for the court house.  He stated that the present heating plant would be sufficient to heat the addition, though it would have to be moved from its present location, on account of putting in a solid foundation for the new vault.

Chairman Darling, of Manawa, also attended the meeting of the committee.
