THE HOFFMAN TROPHY

The trophy, which Charles R. Hoffmann has so kindly donated to the Waupaca Curling Club and for the possession of which a series of games is now being played, is on exhibition in Mr. Hoffmann’s window, and is a very beautiful work of art.  It stands about thirteen inches high, and is a silver loving cup mounted on an ebony base.  The handles are of ebony and the lining of gold.  On the front of the cup is the name of the club and the date, “1901” in the center is a curling with two brooms crossed.  On the base is the inscription “Chas. R. Hoffman Trophy, to be contested for annually by the Waupaca Curling Club”.  The names of the winning rink will be engraved on the cup each year as it is won. Accompanying it are four solid silver curling design scarf pins, which go as individual prizes to the members of the winning rink, and which have been furnished by the skips who are taking part in the contest.

The trophy is to be played for each year by the local club, and is to be held by the winning rink from season to season.  It is as elegant a trophy as has ever been put up for play by a local club and the members of the club feel duly grateful to Mr. Hoffmann for his kindness.

On Monday, Frank Stout gave out his retirement from the present contest.  Neither he nor Frank Whipple can get time to curl, and C.M. Hall, who plays second is troubled with rheumatism, so that he is out of the game this year.  This will make a slight change in the rinks, and it is probable that S.S. chandler, A.W. Hollenbeck, Alfred Larson, and either Peter Holst or some other player will make up the sixth rink.

The Williams rink defeated the Jardine rink on Friday evening last, by a score of 18 to 10, placing Williams among the leaders.  There are yet a number of games to be played, and some interesting contests may be looked for.

Last evening another game was played in the series, Sturtevant’s rink defeating Woodnorth’s rink in a close game, the score being 11 to 6.

The Milwaukee Curling Club will hold a bonspiel next week, commencing on Tuesday, to which all the curlers in the state and Chicago are invited, and a good sized attendance is expected.  There will be two events and a consolation, besides point play.  It is probable that two rinks from this city will attend.
