WAUPCA
REPUBLICAN February
6, 1891 The
Curlers. EDITOR REPUBLICAN: Thinking that an account of the
curlers trip to St. Paul might be of interest to your readers, I will give you
a short outline of it. We left Waupaca
Monday night and arrived in St. Paul the next morning after an all night’s
ride, pretty well tired out. After
breakfast we repaired to Raspberry Island, where the St. Paul club have a
curling rink, (which was recently built at a cost of $9,000) to play for the
Gordon medal. It was our fortune or
misfortune to draw J. Hill’s famous rink of Chicago, and we were defeated by a
score of 29 to 9. There were many
curlers there who were acquainted with Waupaca boys and among them was Mr.
Campbell of St. Paul, an old Scotch curler, who challenged us to play a social
game against his rink in the afternoon, which we did, and got away wit them to
the tune of 22 to 14. Wednesday
forenoon was played the games for the Jobber’s Union and Dalrymple medals. We drew as our opponents in this match
“Fortune’s rink” - the crack team of Winnepeg.
Fortune smiled upon Fortune and his men and we were defeated 17 to 12.
Although we were beaten Mr. Fortune told us we held him closer than any rink he
had played against this year. He has a
record of forty-five victories this winter and not one defeat. The St. Paul curlers did everything possible
to make it pleasant for their guests, and all enjoyed themselves. We did as well, if not better than we
expected, considering the small amount of practice we did, and trust that next
year we will be able to make a record for ourselves. ONE
