WAUPACA POST January
28, 1886 The
North-west Curling Contest The Waupaca curlers who went to
Portage to take part in the curling contest for the Morgan Medal, the North-wet
against Chicago and Milwaukee, report having a good time. There was 15 rinks on a side, or 120 players
altogether, that too, part in the contest.
The positions of the different rinks were assigned by lot, and it fell
to Waupaca to play against a rink from Chicago. The following is score and names of the players of these two
rinks: CHICAGO WAUPACA D. McKay, skip - 12 H.W. Williams, skip - 17 R.C. Harper Fred Loomis Wm. Mauson Edwin Selleck Jas. Ralston John M. Ware The Morgan Medal was won by the
clubs of the North-west, beating Milwaukee and Chicago 24 points, the score
standing 254 for Milwaukee and Chicago to 278 for the North-west. In the evening there was a banquet
at the Fox House, given by the curlers of Columbia County to their visiting
brethren which was a grand success. The
banquet was presided over by A.J. Turner of Portage and was quite informal, but
some of the response to the toasts and the singing were immense. The Chicago News in referring to the
defeat of Chicago and Milwaukee by the North-west has the following: “Just as we expected, Chicago, after having
made a doormat of St. Louis and other aspiring towns that have presumed to meet
at her boating, baseball, and general athletics - having made this record, we
say, Chicago now suffers herself to be beaten at curling by a pair of rural
clubs.” |
