THE WAUPACA REPUBLICAN

A NORWEGIAN HOLIDAY.

The 17th of May is the one grad festival day in Norway and all loyal sons and daughters of the far away north land, whether adopted citizens or other countries or not, remember this day with fond devotion.  It commemorates a political event not only for Norway but to the whole civilized freedom loving world.  For 400 long dark years this little country had been under Danish rule as a tax paying province, its relationship with Denmark being similar to the thirteen colonies and England, but following closely upon the stirring times of the French Revolution and the Revolutionary war in America the hardy Norsemen were quick to see the opportunity to strike a decisive blow at the time Napoleon’s far reaching power was waning and after a sharp conflict proclaimed itself free and independent nation as of yore and adopted a popular constitution based largely upon that adopted by the thirteen colonies and vieing with and in some points even exceeding it in liberality.                       – Stevens Point Journal
