Fremont Opera House Burned

Timely Arrival of Weyauwega Fire Department Undoubtedly Saved Much Money

Saturday evening about 8 o’clock the building occupied by H. Dahlman as a restaurant and soft drink parlor, the second floor of which was the Fremont opera house, was discovered to be on fire and hurried calls were sent to Appleton, Hortonville and Weyauwega for help.

The Weyauwega fire department arrived first and was instrumental in saving other buildings in the business district which would have been prey to the flames had the Fremont fire company been unaided.

Later the Appleton company and still later the Hortonville fire trucks arrived and aided in extinguishing the fire that had destroyed the opera house and had done some damage to other nearby buildings.

The loss is estimated at $10,000 to $12,000 with insurance of $5,000 on the building which was owned by Sam Henjum of Oshkosh.

Mr. Dahlman saved much of his personal effects though considerably damaged.

Only one week previous it is stated four hundred people were in the hall on the second floor with only one narrow stair for exit.
