THE REPUBLICAN

July 2, 1886

Another Arrest.

Last Saturday afternoon owing to a statement made by Ole Christianson to the Sheriff, his deputy and the District Attorney to the effect that he (Christianson) was hired by Sam Stout to burn the Woodnorth building, in which was located Stout’s saloon on the lower floor and the Grand Army hall above. Sheriff Carroll quietly made the arrest on Saturday afternoon upon complaint of a private citizen.  He was taken before police Justice Chesley and bail was fixed at $3,000.  Mr. Stout was not very much surprised that Ole should attempt to drag him into such business, but was surprised that any one would entertain a thought that he would do such a thing.  He was allowed plenty of time to procure bail and the commitment was not placed in the Sheriff’s hands until Sunday afternoon.  The bail was reduced to $1.000 and procured, Joe Reed of Royalton and Ald. Frank Stout going surety.  Of the merits of the case the REPUBLICAN is not prepared to say but if Christianson’s statement is all there is to substantiate the charge the REPUBLICAN would not give much for the evidence.  With the exception of the business Mr. Stout engaged in for some time, we have always heard that his reputation was good.  If he is innocent of the charge we hope he will have no difficulty to prove himself so.
