THE WAUPACA POST August 27, 1891 The following is clipped from the New London Tribune: “The late sale of the DeVoin House, at Waupaca, by George A. Stout to E. L. DeVoin, of the town of Dayton, and the consolidation of the same with the Scoville House under C. L. Scoville’s management has give a new impetus to the long agitated project for another hotel in that city. This time there is strong probability that the plans will materialize. The present project contemplates an 80 x 100 foot, three story brick house on Main street, adjoining the Roberts block on the south. It is reported that a stock company for the purpose will be composed as follows: R. N. Roberts, $6,000; C. S. DeVoin, $3,000; George A. Stout, $1,000; Frank Stout and Will Rutherford, $1,000; C. J. Shearer or Joe H. Woodnorth, $1,000; total, $12,000. C. S. DeVoin would like to lease the hotel, while George A. Stout runs a saloon in connection. The hotel will be built with a court thus precluding the necessity of a single dark room in the house. It is proposed to build a sub-basement and to set the office back far enough from the street to provide for a roomy porch. The house will be eclipsed by none in the state for convenience or style.” The Waupaca people have heard the above report for some years, and part of the above article is a fact. The prospects for a modern hotel are better than ever before. We understand that Stout and Rutherford don’t want stock in this enterprise but will donate $100 for the erection of same. It is stated that Stout and Rutherford bought the Chas. Roberts property for this same purpose. |
