THE REPUBLICAN October 5, 1894 WILLIAM HANSCOMB HERE Ready For Trial on Charge of
Perjury William
Hanscomb, the man on whom Waupaca county spent $1,195.92 for the services of a
Pinkerton detective and nearly as much more for traveling expenses, etc. to
bring him here as a witness during the Mead murder trial, and who went back on
the “little piece” prepared for the benefit of the prosecution by Mr. Goldberg,
and who was proceeded against for perjury, has once more been brought back to
this county at the instance of his bondsmen, Hon. Richard Lea and Frank Stout,
and is ready and anxious for his case to be put on the calendar and tried at
the approaching term of court. Our readers are familiar with the
part Hanscomb played as a witness in the Mead murder trial, and because he did
not swear to things as set to music for him, or, in other words, went back upon
the plan which he alleges Goldberg laid out for him, and how at the close of
the trial he was arrested for perjury because of an alleged affidavit signed
and testimony given opposite to the statement made. It
seems that “after the ball was over” Mr. Hanscomb had no desire to remain at
Hotel de Williams longer at Waupaca county’ expenses, but desired rather to get
back to his family and business in Washington; so induced Messrs. Richard Lea
and Frank Stout to go his surety in the sum of $1,000 for his appearance at the
next term of court. It is known that at
the next term of court all the accessory cases were nolled and wiped off the
records, and Messrs. Lea and Stout, also claim that Mr. Goldberg agreed that
the Hanscomb “perjury” case would share the same fate; that Goldberg claimed
that he knew it was on the calendar, but that it would be left off next time,
etc. However, instead of the Hanscomb
case being wiped off it appeared and the bail bond was declared forfeited. But the bondsmen got the court to allow them
to produce Hanscomb. Another term of
court was drawing near and it is said the bondsmen’s attorneys, Messrs. Cate,
Jones and Sanborn demanded of Mr. Goldberg that he get out the regular papers
for a requisition, but he point blank refused to do it. Thereupon Judge Webb was appealed to again
and he appointed Judge Cate a special district attorney for action in this
case. Requisition
papers were made out and Ralph Rowe was appointed a special officer to act in
the premises. Messrs. Lea and Stout
gave bond, indemnifying Waupaca county against any expenses for Hanscomb’s
appearance. Well,
he is here and the clerk of the court has been notified to instruct the
district attorney to have the Hanscomb case entered upon the calendar for trial
at this term. |
