DAMAGE BY HIGH WATER.

The Waupaca Felting Mills Wrecked When Dam Gives Way – Other Damage Done

Thursday, the sudden rush of water into Waupaca river caused the breaking of the dam between the Fisher & Fallgatter flour mill and the Central Lumber company’s planing mill and the swell of waters in Crystal river caused the breaking of the dam at Waupaca Felting Mils late that night and resulted in serious damage to the buildings of the latter company.  The power house was so badly undermined that some of the walls of the brick building fell into the water and Friday the big brick chimney fell into the stream.  It is estimated that it will take $10,000 to repair the damage to the mill and dam.

John Green Had Plunge

When the wooden dam near Central Lumber company’s mill was threatened, John Green, employee of Fisher & Fallgatter, was at work cutting away the ice jam and when the timbers gave way he was hurled into the boiling waters among ice and wreckage.  Fortunately he was a good swimmer and with the eddying course of the water he succeeded in striking a point at the east of the bridge and was quickly rescued by the bystanders.  His limbs were so bruised that he could not stand and he complained of having been bruised about the head and chest.  His injuries did not prove serious and he was able to get over town Saturday and again Monday.

Dam Replaced.

Fisher & Fallgatter at once repaired the dam so that they can grind as usual.

Work has also begun at the Felting Mills but it is expected that it may take two weeks before traffic can be resumed over that street.
