THE REPUBLICAN April 25, 1890 A. G. NELSON & CO. Their New Planing Mill – Warehouse and Lumber Yard
Below [above on this paper] the REPUBLICAN gives a cut of the new Waupaca Planing Mill and three story brick office and warehouse of Messrs. A. G Nelson & Co., on the east side of the river. While the picture was made for letter-head work and is rather small to show their fine plant to a good advantage, it conveys however, a fair idea of what these enterprising men are doing toward helping enlarge the industries of Waupaca. Mayor A. G. Nelson, the senior member of the firm, is well known in this city, having worked his way from a day laborer, not many years ago, to his present business standing. The old red planing mill of J. P. & A. G. Nelson, was his stamping ground for a number of years, but when Chas. Churchill, one of Waupaca’s well known and enterprising business men, bought J. P. Jenson’s interest, the new firm set about devising means to better their facilities; consequently a tract of land was purchased among the granite rocks across the river, where a spur track was put in from the main line of the Central to reach their new lumber yard, mill and warehouse. Their buildings were completed and put in working order last fall. The mill proper occupies 60 x 64 feet on the main floor. The central part of the building has a second floor, containing some machinery for various work. Here also the driving power enters, transmitted by cable sixty rods away from the water wheel at the electric light dam. All their improved machinery runs like clock-work and they have facilities for turning out everything wanted in the way of finished lumber, sash, doors, blinds, mouldings, etc., as well as any of the factories in the big lumber centers. They give employment to from ten to twenty persons. The office and warehouse is located in the fine three-story brick building on the right. The first room contains the public and private office. Also shelving arranged to hold their large stock of paints, brushes, etc. They also keep in stock plain and fancy glass, and glaze to order. The east room on the first floor and the whole of the second floor contains a large stock of doors, sash, blinds, mouldings, etc. The third floor is occupied by the Waupaca Novelty Works. |
