PLANING MILL BURNS.

During the electrical storm Sunday evening about nine o’clock a bright light shot up in the eastern part of the city which proved to be the Shearer & Jardine planing mill now run by the Central Lumber Company.  Lightning had struck the telephone or electric light wires at the office a few rods to the west and did no further damage there than to smash and tear down the telephone but at the mill it had plenty of dust and shavings to start a big fire.  Owing to phones in the neighborhood being disabled, by the time the firemen could get water on the building but little of the contents were saved.  Much valuable machinery, carpenter tools, finishing lumber, doors, screens, etc., was destroyed, entailing a loss of probably $6,000 to Shearer & Jardine and $1,000 to the Central Lumber Company. Jacob Hanson who has long been the trusty carpenter there lost some of his tools but says the firemen fortunately saved two chests filled with various kinds.  Nothing was insured.  Everything destroyed was a total loss. The Central Lumber Company has leased the A. M. Hanson mill for a short time and promise to have a new and modern mill on the site of the old one in sixty days.  “Never say die” is the Waupaca way.
