- The Waupaca Criterion says:

            - During the session of the Court last Friday afternoon, a thunder storm came up during which the lightning struck an oak tree standing near the Court House in the square splintering it badly, and shocking the people in the court room and offices so that pens fell out of their hands.  What made it more remarkable was the fact that four gentlemen had been playing a match game of croquet within a few feet of the tree, from which the rain had driven them but a minute before.  It was fortunate for them, as, undoubtedly, the whole four would have been killed.
