The Fourth Abroad.
By the accounts in the papers, the celebration of the 4th in Milwaukee, seems to have been an orderly, well got up, and “glorious” affair. JAMES S. MALLORY, Esq., delivered an oration which is said to have been a superior production. The German oration by Dr. FESSELL, is also spoken of in terms of praise. The Military Fire Department, Societies of various kinds, Clubs, citizens, and strangers, turned out en masse, and swelled the procession to mammoth proportions, and altogether it was the handsomest and largest ever witnessed in that city.
At Green Bay, the usual exercises were had – firing a salute at sunrise; a procession was formed at 10 o’clock, and marched to a grove, where addresses were delivered by Judge HOWE and Mr. OLDENBURG, the latter in German. After the exercises at the grove, a large company assembled and partook of a dinner prepared by the host of the U.S. Hotel, at which various toasts were offered. Among the regular ones appears the following:
Governor of Wisconsin. – May he so conduct the affairs of our State as to be able to offer schools for intellect, homes for the industrious, and an asylum for the oppressed and houseless.
The Great West. – The Fountain of youth which Ponce de Leon failed to find. The decaying nations of the old world are here transformed into a young and prosperous people.
A box of Cartridges blew up during the day and injured several persons, but they are all in a fair way to recover.
At Plover, the county seat of Portage Co. the old folks celebration was had, and the Pinery says everybody was there. M. BUGH of Berlin, made the speech, which was patriotic, not politic.
