WAUPACA REPUBLICAN POST September 11, 1913 WATCH YOUR SPEEDOMETER. Waupaca Has Mounted Police
to Apprehended Violators of Speed Law.. Those
who drive an automobile or ride a motorcycle should observe the state law and
not exceed the speed limit of fifteen miles per hour in villages and cities and
twenty-five miles per hour in the country.
The law is certainly just and reasonable and no law abiding man will
object to this regulation for the safety of pedestrians and the drivers of
horses on the streets and highways. The
speed craze, however, has seemingly taken possession of many who drive
auto-mobiles and it is not unusual to see motor propelled vehicles driven at
reckless speed through the streets and in dangerous places on the county roads. This reckless driving has become such a
menace to the safety of the traveling public that the city authorities of
Waupaca have secured the services of Walter Nelson as mounted policeman and he
has entered upon his duties with instruc-tions to take the number of any
motorcycle or automobile that is found to be exceeding the speed limit of
fifteen miles per hour on the streets of Waupaca and he has promised to do his
duty faith-fully without fear or favor and all drivers should heed the law or
they will be reported and will be haled into court, and have to pay a fine for
their folly. Mr. Nelson has already
apprehended some who either thoughtlessly or otherwise have exceeded the speed
limit. James
Post was arrested for riding his motorcycle at thirty miles an hour. Arthur
D. Larson of Sheridan was halted on School Street last Thursday, when on his
way to the Weyauwega Fair, and Justice Nordvi assessed him $10 and costs for
exceeding the fifteen mile limit. Mr.
Larson was much chagrined to be among the first to feel the hand of the law as
he prides himself upon being a very careful driver. He is now numbered among
hundreds of others, who wish to see this reasonable law enforced without
exempting any who are guilty of violation of the speed law. Those
who hope to avoid arrest should be careful as a record is being taken by the
mounted police, who is under strict instruction to enforce the law to the
letter. |
