THE REPUBLICAN December 2, 1898 “Dewey”, Portage County The map of Portage County will look different in the future. Stevens Point, by action of the county board of Portage county has been wiped off and the new town of Dewey created. The name is in honor of the great hero of the Philippines. The Journal says of it: At the afternoon session
November 30, the report of the committee on town organization was adopted. The result of this action is to change the
boundaries of the towns of Sharon, Hull, EauPleine, Carson and Linwood, to
discontinue and eliminate the town of Stevens Point from the map and create the
town of Dewey. In order to create the
new town the east half of township 25 north, range 8 is detached from the town
of Hull and EauPleine, and the same are attached and joined together to
constitute the new town of Dewey. It is
further provided that the first town meeting in the new town shall be held on
the 4th day of next April. |
