Boy Shot Near Fremont

Correspondence of the Daily Northwestern

FREMONT, April 28. – About a week ago as a trapper from this place was riding in a canoe a few miles from here, looking after his traps, he saw through the tall, dry grass what he supposed was a muskrat, and when within about six rods of it fired a charge of duck shot         at it.  Imagine his horror when he discovered that it was the head of a human being – a boy by the name of August Saress, about 12 years old, who lives in the town of Wolf River.  It seems that the boy was sitting in his boat bare-headed, skinning a muskrat, and as the tall course grass presented only a partial view, the mistake is easily accounted for.  Upon examination, it was found that the boy was badly wounded, he having received eleven shots in the head, and fourteen in the right side and shoulder.  Dr. Eddy of Fremont dressed his wounds and he is now in a fair way to get well.                                                    J.W.
