THE REPUBLICAN August 3, 1888 A. D. Barnes. the fruit tree man, and member of the firm of Hewitt & Barnes, Waupun Nursery, since purchasing a 56-acre tract of land opposite Mr. Chas. Churchill’s premises, has made changes and improvements worthy of note. From plans and specifications of his own, Mr. David Yarns as general head man on the job, assisted by W. D. B. McIntire and Gus Lewis, also other carpenters, a fine house has sprung up where a few short months ago was trees and bare soil. The horse barn was built first and there is Mr. and Mrs. Barnes’ family headquarters until his fine three thousand dollar residence is completed. Yes, Mr. Barnes is putting up a neat, model and modern residence which is large and roomy, well built, well lighted and ventilated, will be comfortable winter and summer. It has fine cellar under the whole main part, which is 30 x 30, in it is a fine furnace also a stone cistern holding 200 barrels of water. The house has a fireplace besides the furnace, also supplied with a large bathroom. Mr. Barns will undoubtedly have water-works supplied from the hydraulic system from Mr. Churchill’s spring. The location of Mr. Barnes’ house is an excellent one, there being such a fine grove west and north of the house to break off the wintery winds. When the residence and grounds are completed our local will give further attention to this place. *** Mr. Barnes is a practical horticulturist and has been giving some attention to fruit and nursery business this season. He has a fine soil adapted to the various fruits, and has set out 900 of the best varieties of apples, including Wolf River, Northwester Greening, Duchess, Tetofskky, Snow, and some of the Russian varieties, also 100 of the Early Richmond Cherry. Then there are grapes, currants, raspberries, blackberries and strawberries, all having excellent growth and promising quick and abundant returns. Also Mr. Barnes has set out a good quantity of nursery stock which is looking fine. He has faith that Waupaca can become a fruit and berry center if the people will only set out and give proper car and attention. Mr. Churchill’s gardens were visited and his grape vines and blackberry bushes being loaded showed what good fruit one can have by simply planting and caring for it. |
