A.D. Barnes has solved a new problem in tree planting, that of the use of dynamite.  He digs a hole down about the usual size and depth and then places a charge of a half or a pound of dynamite down a few inches further and touches it off.  The result is an explosion which loosens the earth for a number of feet down and around the hole, giving a magnificent bed for the roots to grow and reach out for soil and moisture.  Mr. Barnes discovered the plan by using dynamite in the hard pan while digging a ditch for a water main from his reservoir on the hill to the house.  Trees and strawberry plants planted near that ditch made twice the growth during last summer than on any other part of his fruit farm.  Consequently he became convinced that his plan for tree planting for the future would be by dynamite.
