THE WAUPACA POST

May 9, 1884

William House is one of the most unfortunate of individuals. About two weeks ago he cut a large gash in his foot with an ax, and last week Friday while adjusting a belt on his sewing machine, had his right hand completely severed at the base of the thumb.  Dr. Corbett was called as soon as possible, who reported that the bones were badly mangled. It is thought that the wrist joint can be saved, in which case an artificial hand can be attached, which will be of much use.  A circumstance connected with the absent hand, which is kept in a box, is that if the fingers are cramped or the hand becomes cold the sensation is quickly felt by Mr. House, as though his hand was not severed.  Mr. H. is in as comfortable a condition as his situation will admit, and aside from is wounds is in good health.

On Friday last William House, while at work sawing fencing with a horse-power machine, met with a terrible accident.  While at work very near the saw his hand in some manner was caught by the saw and taken entirely off just below the wrist joint.  He was at once taken to Weyauwega where Dr. Corbett dressed the wound.
