SAMUEL LAWRENCE

Samuel Lawrence was a pioneer in Rural, coming to that village a year or so after Dr. Ashman in the ‘50’s.  A sister of Mr. Lawrence married J. A. Dake, the old lady being a member of the Soldier’s Home.

Mr. Lawrence was a carpenter and there not being very much doing and wages were low when the great Chicago fire came in 1871 he struck out for the stricken city and secured plenty of work at $2 per day.

Later he located at Galesburg, Ill.  There were five heirs to the property Mr. Lawrence sold to Camp Cleghorn and they all coincided it would be a good thing to sell now even at a low price and divide the money than to hold it for future rise.

After selling the property and settling with the heirs Mr. Lawrence visited a few days with his old neighbor Dr. Ashman and family and then returned to Galesburg.
