THE REPUBLICAN

December 12, 1884

Miss Clara Lovejoy, a young girl about 15, daughter of A. H. Lovejoy who lives on the Scott place north of the city, was coming down on Wednesday morning last, to her work at Mrs. Carr’s dressmaking rooms; when in front of where G. I. Lord is building, a plank in the walk that had been removed and laid down again without fastening, slipped off from the stringer as she stepped on the same letting her right limb down through the hole, falling over and attempting to save herself she wrenched her knee very badly.  She was unable to walk and Mr. T. Rich and Elmer Palmer carried her into Hole & Johnson’s store.  Mr. Rich notified Dr. Calkins, and then took the young lady home.  The limb swelled very badly and was very painful.  Her case has been exceedingly critical up to this morning.  The city, or somebody may be liable for this sidewalk accident.
