WAUPACA REPUBLICAN POST August 21, 1913 STOLEN AUTO RECOVERED. Some
time about eleven o’clock Wednesday of last week, the Reo car of Dr. O. N.
Mortenson was taken from his barn by parties who had some difficulty in
starting the machine as Rev. Milne across the street heard them make the
start. Before going a block the machine
was “chocked down” and they had to get out to crank it. They went through Main
Street without lights and policeman Hazen did not make the effort to detain
them that he might have made had it not been for the fact that the machine was
recognized as a home car, and the matter could be taken up next day. When
Dr. Mortenson found a vacant place in his barn next morning, Sheriff Tollefson
got busy and was sworn in communication with the surrounding cities and finally
the car was located about a mile from Appleton. Dr.
Mortenson and C. Nelson went to Appleton and found the car with fender bent and
one tire blown out. Dr. Mortenson was
pleased to find no more damage done to the machine and now wonders whether the
three members of the party were out for a joy ride or intended to steal and
sell the car. It is more likely they
were out only for a joy ride. |
