WAUPACA REPUBLICAN POST August 21, 1913 OTHER OLD SETTLERS. One
of the most valuable results of the recent Homecoming is the opportunity it
offered for people of this immediate community to get better acquainted. Many old residents of Waupaca are too modest
to give their own career and it is through the statements in the newspapers
that facts are brought to light and that mistakes are corrected. Our
attention has been called to the fact that J. M. Vaughn first came to Waupaca
by way of Berlin and that he was closely followed by James Thomas, who wintered
on the old Thomas farm southeast of Waupaca in the winter of 1849. His son George Thomas of this city was the
first male child born in the settlement, known as Waupaca in 1851. Other similar facts on the early settlement
will be welcome to space in these columns. |
