THE
REPUBLICAN Friday,
April 16, 1886 An Important Transfer, Will It Be a Boom For Waupaca! The saying has always been “Winfield Scott clings to his fine
rapids water power with tenacious grip and won’t let go without an awful
price.” Such has proved not to be the case. On Wednesday the papers were made out for
the transfer of this fine water power above Baldwin & Bailey’s pond, what
is known as “Scott’s Rapids” and all the land below the brewery and also some
on the south side besides, to the Waupaca Electric Light Association. The consideration we believe was two
thousand dollars a very reasonable figure considering the property. Much credit is due to the good judgment of
Hon. A. G. Nelson, president of the Association, and others of the electric light
board in getting this transfer. A dam
will be put in at once, and building erected for the water wheel, dynamos and
plant of the Waupaca Electric Association. * * * But it will not stop there. This fine water power is in the hands of men, who are all in business and have an interest in Waupaca. It will be their desire to induce manufacturing enterprise to locate on their water power. This summer may mark the starting point for Waupaca’s positive march onward and upward in industry, prosperity and population. * * * From the light of events the past few months it has been
demonstrated that the inland city is far the best point for manufacturing
enterprise. It is nearer the timber and
iron mines, and such things as strikes and lock-outs are almost unknown in the
small town. Simply because, the
operatives generally own their own little homes, and their children are getting
educated at the schools in the town.
While in the large city it is generally the reverse and a large
proportion are unmarried or away from home and family. The saloon and other temptations are so much
greater, that it is easier for the fires of discontent to be kindled, therefore
the healthy small city is far preferable to plant manufacturing enterprise than
the wicked metropolitan town. Railroads
are sure to strike out to the business town to get business too. Agitate the all
important subject - manufactures - every business man in Waupaca. |
