EXTENDING THE POTATO BELT

 

            That the “Waupaca County Potato Belt” has extended in the past twenty-five years through Portage, Waushara and Wood Counties and has just invaded Jackson county, we extract an article from the Badger State Banner published at Black River Falls, showing that the A.M. Penney Company of this city is the invaders and Harry Nicholson one of our baseball enthusiasts is the buyer.  Jackson County soil is well adapted to potatoes and will no doubt soon supplant the Indian blueberry lands and other sandy loams, and not only be a boom but a cash boom to the country.

            Following is the item from the Banner of last week.

 

DUNN’S POTATO WAREHOUSE

 

            “The new potato warehouse recently completed by John F. Dunn, in connection with his elevator and feed mill, near the depot, is now in use, he having leased it to A.M. Penney Company, the celebrated Waupaca potato dealers.  Harry Nicholson, representing that firm is now buying.

            The warehouse is located just south of and adjoining the engine room of Mr. Dunn’s plant.  The walls are of brick and are lined with lumber, with a four inch air space between the lining and the wall.   It is so arranged that any amount of fire needed may be kept in the basement, with the warmth thus created coming up through this air space.  The size of the building is 30 x 40 feet, and it has eight bins, with a capacity of about 7,000 bushels.  This is probably not as large as will be needed here after the field is properly developed, but it is a starter, and it will doubtless help to encourage the production of potatoes in this vicinity in future years.  It will be a good thing for the city, and Mr. Dunn is entitled to commendation for putting it up entirely at his own expense and risk.”
