FOR BETTER POTATOES

Old National Bank Offers Prizes for Successful Efforts

Of School Boys of the Community

In the offer by the Old National Bank of $100 in seven prizes to school boys in a potato growing contest, we should not lose sight of the fact that the motive is to stimulate interest in productive pursuits on the part of boys rather than to improve the standard of potatoes raised by those who participate in the contest would hardly justify the outlay if it were confined to those who enter the contest.  The example of those who take part will later be emulated by others who this year stand by and watch.  The methods employed by those who take part will be watched and discussed by both young and old and it is possible that as much may be learned by the mistakes and failures of some as will be learned from the success of others.  Finally it is not the prize but the effort, thought and study of the boys who enter the contest that has the greatest real value.  Already thirty-two boys have expressed a determination to enter the contest five having entered on Monday of this week.  No doubt the number will be doubled within the few days.  Following is the summary of a circular sent Mr. Dressen, the cashier of the Old National.  To school children between ten and eighteen years living in Dayton, Lind, Farmington, Royalton, St. Lawrence, Waupaca, Lanark, Belmont, Saxeville and Springwater, the Old National Bank will give prizes as follows for the best acre of potatoes raised during the season of 1916; First prize, $35; second, $25; third, $15; fourth, $10; fifth, sixth and seventh, $5 each; total, $100.
