THE EXPENSE OF RAISING POTATOES
In replay to the item in last week’s Tribune wish to say that the expense to the farmer of raising an acre of potatoes which yields 200 bushels per acre is about as follows:
Putting on fertilizer of any kind $ 5.00
Plowing and dragging 3.00
Seed last spring at 75¢ bu. 12 bu. To acre without cost of cutting 9.00
Planting 2.00
Dragging and cultivating 4.50
Paris Green and spraying 3.50
Digging and hauling, short haul 10.00
Total $37.00
Two hundred bushels at 20¢, $40; farmer’s profit, 1-1/2c per bushel; dealer’s profit, 4c per bushel. When you say 20c to the farmer it sounds small, but it’s a whole lot smaller than it sounds. We consider 200 bushels per acre a mighty good crop of potatoes and now in comparing the farmer’s profit with the dealer’s, it looks pretty small.
