REPUBLICAN September
2, 1992 Potato
Freak W.D.B. McIntyre brought to our
Sanctum Monday, a new idea, (to the writer, at least,) in regard to gaining
time in raising potatoes from seed. It
is this: Mr. McIntyre discovered a
potato blossom that had got “tipped” in the dirt and from the germs of the
blossom or seed ball, roots caught and one good sized and one small potato
grew. Here is a suggestion, would it not be a good idea for those who want to
experiment on raising seed potatoes to watch when the blossom, or potato ball
is in the right stage and “tip” them in the dirt. If the results would prove as this vine shows, a gain of a year
would be made in propagating potatoes from the seed. In the above exhibit as noted, the potato planted was a Hebron. One of the potatoes that grew from the tip
had the appearance of a Hebron and the other looked like a Peerless. |
