WAUPACA
REPUBLICAN December
4, 1885 Waupaca
Market The REPUBLICAN has not got ready yet
to make up its annual boom statement in regard to Waupaca potatoes, general
produce, freights, etc., but the reports thus far received since the season
opened Sept. 1, are very gratifying as showing this to be the great
agricultural center of trade in this section of Wisconsin. The amount of potatoes in store will not
vary much from 50,000 bushels and there has probably been shipped about 60,000
bushels. As there was over 400,000 bushels shipped from this city at the close
of last season, it is safe to conclude, by making a reduction on the production
this year that the farmers in the vicinity of this market have over 200,000
bushels in their cellars, waiting for better prices or more time to draw them.
Zero weather does not interfere with the business here as they will be handled
in sacks, and shipped in cars warmed by stoves. Thus January and February are the most lively months for
shipping. Our buyers have paid about
Chicago prices right along through this fall, and the average price 40 cents
would make between $40,000 and $50,000 as having been distributed among the
farmers for murphies already. There is
one caution to make to farmers who have their cellars filled with potatoes -
when the price quickens, don’t hold off too long. Sell out your stock. It don’t
pay to hold over until late in the spring as past experience has proven to the
buyer who invariably gets left if he holds too long. |
