WAUPACA REPUBLICAN

January 12, 1884

Potatoes bring from 35 to 40 cts.; 45 being for the very choicest Burbanks.  The fact is, Waupaca started the boom price last fall, the buyer and many farmers have been compelled to hold their stocks while Michigan dealers having as outlet to Milwaukee and Chicago by the lake have uploaded at a fair margin and at prices about what our buyers paid in the fall, and made money, while a large share of our tubers are yet in hand.  From now out it looks as if the farmer would have to take a low price for what he has on hand because our buyers, many of them, have got about all they can work off and will do well if they get out even.  Another thing the farmer will have to raise a white potato to sell - the Burbank - or similar variety, because all the leading markets call for no other at fancy figures.
