THE WAUPACA REPUBLICAN May 8, 1896 THE GRANITE QUARRY It Has Orders on Hand and more in Sight. Tommy Davidson’s faith in the Waupaca granite quarry has been rewarded by a good many orders for fine monumental work during the past few years and the work once placed in a cemetery is its own advertisement. It calls for some other order. George Archer of Chicago, who was the superintendent of the quarry here during the time it was operated by over one hundred men on some important jobs for Chicago, Omaha, Kansas City, Minneapolis, etc., was here last week to see how the work for the Balcom estate was progressing. Tommy Davidson and Alex Robertson as stone cutters and designers and Wm. Smith the boss polisher are at work on ten columns of the grey mottled stone 7 feet 3 inches long and from 12 to 18 inches in diameter to be used in an expensive monument in Graceland cemetery, Chicago. The base and cap stones are being gotten out at the Rockville, Minn., quarry. Mr. Archer has a contract for a full granite waiting room and office for the Graceland cemetery and is getting bids for the work. Mr. Davidson has given him the figures, which if accepted, will keep thirty men busy for three months to complete the order. As they are stuck on Waupaca granite for beauty the chances are in Waupaca’s favor. Davidson says he can see nothing to hinder the Waupaca granite quarry from getting (illegible) in the near future, providing the owners push it along in the right way. |
