THE REPUBLICAN January 28, 1887 THE FIRST MONUMENT From the Waupaca Granite Quarry OSHKOSH NORTHWESTERN: It is expected that the first monument from the granite quarry in Waupaca County owned by Ripley and Mead and others of this city will be on exhibition at J. J. Moore’s in a few days. Work at the quarry is now being steadily pushed and about twenty men are employed in the various departments of the work. At present the stone is especially suitable for monuments. The granite is quarried out of a ledge lying along the side of the south branch of the Little Wolf River between Waupaca and Ogdensburg. The quarry is operated by a stock company which is organized with a capital stock of $40,000. Among other improvements which the company has made is a mill in which cutting and polishing is done. Since the opening of the quarry land in this vicinity has risen in value and it is said that Chicago parties recently made and effort to secure land near by in the hopes of striking a quarry. The property in the immediate vicinity, however, is owned by the Oshkosh parties who cut pine on it many years ago and it is surmised that the present owners will hold it unless an enormously high figure is offered for it. J. J. Moore, of this city, who is certainly well qualified to judge says that the granite is of a superior quality and from all that can be learned from outside parties the quarry bids fair to turn out the finest granite in the country. |
