Railroad and Fire 1871
OSHKOSH NORTHWESTERN
January 12, 1871
Waupaca County
Our Weyauwega correspondent writes as follows: parties have been surveying along the proposed route of the W.P. & S. R.R. , from Doty’s Island to Stevens’ Point, during the past summer. The right of way and stipulated subsidies have been voted, and the work of building is about to commence. It is proposed to build a first-class trunk road, having a grant of 2,000,000 acres of land of the very finest quality, mostly pine. Leaving Doty’s Island, it passes near Young’s Corners to Weyauwega, thence to Waupaca, by way of Amherst to Steven’s Point, where it forms a junction with a road to be built from Portage, continuing on to some point on lake Superior, probably Bayfield.
On Saturday morning last, about 9 o’clock, the grist mill of Messrs. Dayton & Dewey, recently built on the north side of the river in the village of Waupaca, took fire in the roof from some unknown cause, and was entirely consumed. It contained three run of stone and cost, it is said, $6,000. A tannery of a Mr. Scholtz, opposite, was also destroyed.
