There have been loud complaints this winter in all sections of the country, regarding delay of trains on railroads. At the east it has been worse than with us at the west, because there has been more snow there. When there are snow drifts the engineer cannot send his engine through them, and when it is excessively cold it requires more than ordinary nerve to send it around a curve at the speed necessary to make time. And to save property and lives, the railroad officials instruct employees to run for safety. This caution should be commended, for though there have been an unusually large number of broken rails, wheels, axles and connecting rods, but four or five of them have resulted in bad accidents. It is said by those who watch such things, that in the last two months there have been more broken and mashed rails than in any winter in many years.
