RAILWAY WRECK AT SHERIDAN

Two Heavy Freight Trains Meet in

Head-On Collision

Wednesday morning as freight train No. 32 from the north bore down the grade west of Sheridan under orders to side track at Sheridan to allow freight train 29, west bound, to pass, Engineer Zimmermann found it impossible to stop his very heavy train before reaching the switch.

The consequence was a head-on collision of the two heavy freight trains on the main track.  The train crew on No. 29 all jumped in time to escape injury but Engineer Zimmermann sustained a fracture of his left leg in jumping from his engine after he saw that he could not avert the accident.

A wrecking train from Fond du Lac and one from Abbotsford were hastened to the scene, and after a delay of five or six hours, passenger trains were again running.

The two freight engines sustained only moderate damage and about ten freight cars in the two trains were ditched.
