THE WAUPACA POST April 21, 1898 A NARROW ESCAPE Last
Friday the afternoon passenger trains narrowly escaped a collision. As is known, the trains meet at this
station, the south bound train usually pulling in first, and the north bound
train taking the switch until the former has proceeded upon its way. When the engineer on the south bound train
tried to use the air brake, just before reaching the station, it would not
work, and the train went by at the rate of thirty miles an hour, it being down
grade. Fortunately the north bound
train was a few moments late, giving the south bound a chance to stop and back
up. If No. 5 had been on time, a
collision would surely have occurred. An investigation found that the air brake hose had been tampered with. Two tramps who were stealing rides, were arrested, kept for a day or two and then released, there being no evidence to connect them with the affair. |
