THE COUNTY POST Thursday, March 22, 1923 SOO FREIGHT WRECK NEAR
SHERIDAN Fast Freight No. 24, East-Bound Breaks in Two at Sheridan Friday Night With Heavy Losses Soo Line
Freight No. 24, east-bound, Friday night, broke in two just west of Sheridan
crossing. The engine and fourteen cars
kept the track. The fifteenth car
jumped the track and rolled over and those behind followed the example of the
first to roll over and pile up in an almost indistinguishable mass of
wreckage. Fifteen of the wrecked cars
contained lumber, six were loaded with bran, one or two with flour and others
with miscellaneous freight; shingles, canned peas and the like. Wrecking
crews from Stevens Point and Fond du Lac worked to save what might be of
value. It is estimated that a loss of
40 per cent of the value of the freight besides the damage to equipment will be
borne by the railroad company. Traffic
was delayed ten hours in consequence of the derailment. This was the scene of a freight wreck some
four or five years ago which at the time was said to be the most expensive
freight wreck ever experienced by the Soo Line. During the past month several derailments on the Soo Line have delayed trains passing through Waupaca according to reports from time to time. |
