WAUPACA
RECORD LEADER August
31, 1916 WAR
MESSAGE TO CROSS WISCONSIN, STARTS
SEPT. 11th. There is a change in date for the
sending of the message by the War Dept., from Plymouth Rock to Seattle, from
the Fourth of September to September 11, and the Relays will start a week
later, arriving here on the 13th at 8:45 a.m. instead of on the 4th, as
announced. Dr. Christofferson will take the
relay from Fremont to Stevens Point, and Arthur Clements will relay from
Stevens Point to Marshfield. Mr. Erle Whipple of this city is general manager of the race from Milwaukee to Minneapolis and will make the entire trip with the several relay autos. It will be the endeavor to make and
maintain a speed not less than 30 miles an hour across the state and this means
a pretty fast gate at the good spots. It will mean a boost for better
roads and for that reason this event is worth encouraging. Mr. Whipple has written to the
various sections in part: “I am planning to be in Milwaukee to
receive the message and accompany it across each relay. If there are any impassable pieces of road
in your immediate vicinity, you can greatly assist the Yellowstone Trail Association
by having a little work done at such places.
Sometimes the filling up of a bad hole in the road, or a little work at
the approach of a bridge will avoid the stopping or at least the slowing down
of the car, all of which tends to increase the time consumed. If there are any
places where it is necessary to make a detour, full information regarding the
same will be greatly appreciated by me.” |
