THE WAUPACA REPUBLICAN June 27, 1884 Hello! The Telephone. Mr. C. G. Starks of Berlin, editor of the Journal, who has charge of the telephone in that city, was over to Waupaca the first of the week. He says the Wisconsin Telephone Company want Waupaca to raise about $800 to build the line from Pine River to this city. This will place us in direct communication with Milwaukee, Fond du Lac, Oshkosh, Ripon, Berlin, Neenah, Appleton, Green Bay, etc. For all amounts subscribed books with coupon tickets to pay for telephone service will be given to subscribers and these tickets will pay for telephone service anywhere. And one advantage to those holding coupon tickets, they will get telephone service at ten cents discount on each message. In conversation with our business men many were in favor of the telephone and willing to subscribe liberally for the tickets. A number were in favor of a telephone exchange right away. While a telephone exchange is what may be wanted it was the opinion of Mr. Starks that it would be Waupaca’s best plan to get communication with the outside world first. As soon as fifteen subscribers for instruments are secured the company will come and put up the lines in the city, place the instruments and give us an exchange. Mr. Starks thinks if Waupaca will get the line here and take the interest that should be taken in his lively little city, that it would be but a little while before the lines will be extended to the important places in the county, also to Stevens Point. In a few days the REPUBLICAN scribe will go around with the subscription paper and see what can be done toward getting that useful and modern communication. No money will be required until the line is up and ready for business. |
