WAUPACA REPUBLICAN March 1, 1907 SLATER SELLS EXCHANGE J. S. Von Almen of Appleton purchases Waupaca Citizens’ Telephone Exchange H. G. Slater came here six years ago and found the people all ready and anxious for an independent telephone exchange on an enlarged scale. The Badger lines and exchange had not been kept up properly and the people were afraid the Bell Co. might advance rates if they had the entire field to themselves again so they readily endorsed Mr. Slater’s progressive spirit and soon an exchange was running with 150 subscribers on an all metallic circuit. So popular has the telephone become in this locality that the exchange which embraces lines to the Home and rural lines in Farmington and Dayton that the last exchange card issued showed about 300 subscribers in the exchange. Pretty good list for a town of 3,000 population. Mr. Slater having other business ventures in view, has this week sold his entire exchange and lines to J. S. Von Almen of Appleton, who will this week take hold of his new purchase with the good will of our people and a warm welcome, not forgetting the fact that great credit is due to Mr. Slater in bringing such a splendid enterprise into life and activity in our city and vicinity. No changes of the working force are contemplated. Mr. H. J. Betts the lineman and “trouble fixer” who has been here about a year, will no doubt continue with the new management. |
