FIRST FIRE THIS WINTER

A.L. Bailey’s House went up in Smoke.

On Wednesday evening about nine o’clock, Mrs. Wagner, who lives on the hill west of the reservoir, looked out of her window and saw a bright blaze in the kitchen and coming out of the roof near the chimney of A.L. Bailey’s house on Bailey street, First Ward.  Mr. Wagner ran out and yelled fire, which alarm was taken up by others and soon the fire bell warned the department, when the hose wagon and hook and ladder apparatus started in the direction of a bright light shining through the fog and timber.  They soon met some one who said the fire was beyond the river in Farmington and while they were discussing the situation it was further learned that Mr. Bailey’s house was ablaze.  The hose wagon went to the hydrant near the reservoir but as that hydrant has to have direct pressure the house was too far gone to pay to lay  the hose and send word to start the pumps.  A number of neighbors gathered and saved a good many things on the lower floor and basement, but everything in the kitchen and chambers was consumed.  The house and contents lost were valued at $2500, upon which there was insurance on the house of $1000, and on the furniture of $200 in I.P. Lord’s agency.  The family have temporarily secured quarters in the Beardmore house on Jefferson street.
