REPUBLICAN
POST July
25, 1912 Spuds
On Long End (baseball
article) Waupaca’s pounding spuds pounded out
a creamed potato victory from a bunch of Milwaukee men last Sunday by a score
of 10 to 3. But the batters were not
alone in their work. Wah Hoffmann
pitched a hot game, holding the Cream City bunch down to six measley singles
and fanning out ten of their sluggers. It was a beautiful game to
anticipate and a beautiful game to watch for about half the game, after which
the one-sideness of the score brought disinterest to the once howling
bleachers. Before the game we heard about
the number of American Association men in the line-up, what sluggers and
slingers they were, and of countless ways they were going to serve our crop of spuds. The few which were a little frightened were made fearless by the
rolling up of five big scores in the first - enough scores to win the game and
then some, and by a blank for Milwaukee.
By the end of the third the score stood eight and one. The eighth saw
two scores added to each column, making the final score ten and three. The scoring was brought about by 13
solid swats off Hollenbeck, five of them two baggers, mixed in with lots of
generous errors by the opposing recruits.
Butch landed on the ball for two of the two baggers and Ed Flanagan,
Galloway and Maple each got one. Maple
also lined out a three bagger. All
figured in the run column. When the game was over our Spuds
were smiling yet. Tra La! |
