WAUPACA REPUBLICAN

December 21, 1883

There is an organization in this city, the existence of which seems to be known to but very few.  We refer to the “Grand Army of the Republic” which was instituted two and a half years ago under quite favorable circumstances but which for some cause or other has had all up hill work and latterly, since having everything destroyed by fire have barely maintained an existence.  Indeed the “boys” met one night to settle things up and have a funeral, but concluded to have instead a resurrection, and have started in afresh with some encouraging circumstances.

It would seem to an outsider that a membership in a veteran club like this would be very desirable, and cannot see how any person eligible to membership can afford not to belong to it.  Money, influence, age or condition cannot secure a membership there, nothing but an honorable discharge from the late war.

The name of the “Post” in this city is “Garfield Post No. 21, Dept. of Wisconsin”.  The following is the roll of officers elected at the last meeting, to serve for the coming year.:

            Com. W.S. Bemis; S.V.C. A.J. Van Epps; J.V.C. J.O. Scott; Chap. E.B. Thompson; Q.M. Geo. Allen; O.D. J.H. Woodnorth; O.G. W. Chady.

J.H. Woodnorth was elected as representative to the Grand Encampment, J.O. Scott as Alternate. The Post intend to hold some public meetings this winter and have the promise of some speakers whom the people will be glad to hear.
