After a severe illness of several weeks, following a sudden attack of Bright’s disease, W.J. Hocking passed away at his home in this city early Tuesday morning, May 21.

Winfield J. Hocking was born in Dodgeville, Wis., in 1857, where he spent his boyhood.

He took a two years course at Madison and later filled a clerkship in Chicago for a time.  He was in business at Florence several years and came to Waupaca about seventeen years ago and engaged in the drug business with his brother, F.S. Hocking, now of Seattle, Washington.

Deceased was a devoted husband and father, a faithful member of the M.E. Church, a most energetic business man and an upright citizen.

He leaves an aged mother, a widow, three sons, Stanley, Harold and George, three daughters, Mrs. A.O. Knight, Lucille and Willa, two brothers and three sisters to mourn his untimely death.  The sympathy of the entire community goes out to the bereaved family.

The funeral will be held at the residence Thursday at two o’clock, during which time all business places in the city will be closed as a mark of respect for a prominent and esteemed citizen.
