THE REPUBLICAN February 21, 1896 Miss Blanche Calkins gave a pleasant and unique Leap Year party last Friday evening. The invitations were written on white with red ink and at the top, tied with white satin ribbon was a pink heart. Each gentleman was provided with a red heart score card and a couplet in rhyme telling how to find their partner, the “key” to the couplet being attached to the ladies’ hearts. The following is a list of the couplets and keys. Before this game you can begin, If this game you wish to grapple, Your sweetheart you will have to win, Hunt for Eve and steal the apple. Candy heart. “That means me.” Candy apple. If you are a suitor bold, All your wits together put, Seek the girl with a heart of gold, And find the maid with the Trilby foot. Gold heart. Doll’s foot. If your partner you long to see, Do not think that it’s a sin, Find the maid with the silver key. To choose the girl who has the tin. Silver key. A penny. If in this game you would be wise, Don’t stand around and look so stupid, Watch it with two pair of eyes. But find the girl who has captured cupid. Eyes for hooks Cupid. Don’t look as if you’d lost all hope, Don’t think you’re sick and send for Trimble, But look for the girl with the bar of soap. But brace up quick and hunt the thimble. A tiny bar of soap. Small thimble. Seek your partner left and right, To carry a bottle would never do. You’ll know her by her diamond bright. But all may carry a small cork-screw. A “big” diamond. Small cork-screw. Progressive hearts was the order of the evening. Mr. W.B. McArthur and Miss Stella Wheeler carrying off the favors. |
