REPUBLICAN POST November
4, 1909 J.H.
LEUTHOLD. J.H. Leuthold was born in Zurich,
Switzerland, Dec. 11, 1821. He attended school until twelve
years of age, after which his school attendance consisted of but one day in the
week. In 1857 Mr. Leuthold left Europe for
America. He came by rail as far as Fond
du Lac, then by boat as far as Gills Landing, then by team to Scandinavia where
he lived for a time. Shortly after, he bought a farm in
the town of Helvetia where he has since resided. In 1857 he built his first house where his aged parents who came
to America with him, spent their remaining days. Mr. Leuthold was married twice, the
first time to Fredaline Fehr. From this
union four children were born, two of which, Mrs. Jacob Wipf and Wilfred
Leuthold of Iola survive him. In 1872
his wife died and he was later married to Emma Staub. Seven children were born, to them, four of which, Henry, of
Chicago; Edward, Meta and Robert of Iola and their mother, survive him. Mr. Leuthold was one of the popular
and influential citizens of Helvetia, being town clerk for thirteen years and
chairman for fifteen years. In 1860
when Helvetia township was set off from Iola, he suggested the name and up to
the time of his death took a very great interest in its affairs. He possessed great musical and
poetical talent. A few of his poems
have been published but most of them are still in manuscript form. He was a member of the German
Reformed church in which he took an active part. Mr. Leuthold was always in the best of health until six months before his death when old age brought in complications. He passed away Oct. 26, 1909. |
