Special Committee on Removal of County Seat Would Deny Petitions

Following is a verbatim report of the special committee on removal of county seat which was made to the county board Wednesday:

The committee appointed by the chairman of the County Board for the removal of the county seat beg to report as follows:

We met on February 9th at the courthouse to get lowest bids from the abstractors for furnishing names of freeholders of the county.  The first bids received were 25 cents per name for all resident freeholders.  We finally compromised at 17-1/2 cents per name not, counting duplicates.

We found that there were 7181 freeholders in the county and that the petitions contained only 2050 freeholders.  This, not being one half of the total number in the county, as required by law, we recommend that the petition be denied. – Respectfully submitted, S.E. Wright, H.E. Shipman, John Madsen, R.M. Hanson, Hans Nath.

It will be noted that with 7181 freeholders in the county the petitions should contain at least 3591 names so the 2050 names on the petitions were 1541 short of the required number.
