WAUPACA REPUBLICAN March 30 1916 PASSING ON OF PIONEERS Mrs. T.M. Paine, a Resident of County Since 1849 – Mrs. Henry Austin Since 1863 Last Wednesday, March 22nd, marked the passing of two pioneers of Waupcaa county and interment took place at Lakeside cemetery on Saturday afternoon. Both were temporarily at the homes of relatives, Mrs. Austin at the home of her son, W.A.Hazen, at Stanley, and Mrs. Paine at the home of her granddaughter, Mrs. Roy Chady, at Oshkosh.
Mrs. T.M. Paine Mary B. Chandler was born Nov. 6, 1834 and in 1849 came with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Wilkes Chandler who settled in the Vaughan and Chandler neighborhood four miles southeast of this city. She was a sister of the late Mrs. M.R. Baldwin and a cousin of S.S. Chandler and Dr. Chandler of this city. In 1852 she was united in marriage with Thaddeus M. Paine and of this union two children were born, a daughter Phoebe (Mrs. Grover of this city) and a son, John W., who died March 2, 1897. After the death of her husband October 26, 1886, the subject of this sketch has made her home in this city most of the time with her daughter, Mrs. Grover. Deceased was one of the few remaining pioneers who came to Waupaca county in 1849 or 1850, her cousin, S.S. Chandler, of this city having come here to reside in the latter year. Rev. A. Mrs. H.A. Austin passed away at the home of her son, W.A. Hazen, where she had spent the winter, on March 22 at one o’clock p.m., after an illness of only twelve days with bronchial pneumonia. Harriet Amanda French was born in Noyan, Province of Quebec, January 11, 1837. She spent her girlhood days in Clarenceville, Quebec. She was confirmed and joined the Episcopal church at the age of sixteen; married to Abner Hazen Oct. 19, 1863, in Champlain, New York, coming to Weyauwega the same year. To this union one son was born, Wallace A. Hazen. They moved to the old homestead in town of Lind, where she has resided ever since. Abner Hazen died Jan. 31, 1867.
