10 1915 PIONEER
OF COUNTY CELEBRATES ANNIVERSARY Friends
and Relatives from Many Towns Join in Party - Base
Ball Game a Special Feature. On Thursday occurred the annual
birthday picnic party at the home of Nat Pope at Lind Center; the occasion
celebrated the 86th anniversary of Mr. Pope, who with the late Nathan White,
Calvin Parker, Alonzo Gardner, and several of Mr. Pope’s brothers were among
the earliest settlers in the town of Lind.
Mr. Pope is practically the sole survivor of that group of sturdy
pioneers. There were in attendance children,
grandchildren and even great-grandchildren; they came from Minneapolis, from
Colby, Elcho, Hurley and other Wisconsin points to attend the picnic; the
neighbors all of whom are friends to the host, were there to give weight to the
occasion and to express their felicitations. At noon a sumptuous table was laid with every good thing that culinary skill could devise; there was indication also of the best of spirit and good will in the feast. The tables cleared, the elderly people comfortably seated as spectators the fathers in the crowd to the number of nine proceeded to “trim up” the youngsters who were presumptuous enough to challenge their dads to a baseball game. Remembering the former prowess of such diamond stars as Guy Pope, Bert Pope, Linas Michelson, Walter Roemer, Henry West and Del Custard we wager a surprise was in store for the sons - especially those of Del Custard, Linas Michelson and Walt Roemer. The writer did not learn the score. The shadows of evening began to
lengthen before the party broke up, each family to go its several ways to
duties awaiting at home; but with plans already in part formulated for the
celebration of next year’s anniversary day. Mrs. David Parish of this city, a
sister, and Alvin Pope, a brother of Red Cloud, Neb., are the sole survivors of
Mr. Pope’s generation. Both are still in good health. The Record-Leader wishes to join his
innumerable host of friends in extending our congratulations to Mr. Pope. |
